Are you wondering why does your face breaks out when you wash it? Worry no more here’s why:
The use of facial cleansers with irritants often causes your face into breaking out due to being forced into reactive overproduction of cortisol and hormonal fluctuations. But for others’ it’s following a stress-triggering event likely to cause acne or pimples to break out on your forehead and cheeks even after washing it frequently.
And for those of us who have experienced facial breakouts before, we know that they can be quite exhausting to treat.
The most tiresome part about having break outs is the scars and the black spots that you have in your face, long after the acne has ended.
It can take an even longer time to make them fully disappear- as long as you use the right products, of course.
If you are not familiar, we are talking about acne. It happens to most of us at some point in our lives or the other.
While many people experience it during an adolescent age, acne generally affects people of all ages and skin types.
As such, you need to make sure that you take care of your facial skin, especially if you know that you have the skin tone type that is more prone to break outs.
In this article, we will give you some of the reasons why we experience facial break outs, focusing on the type of acne that comes as a result of washing your face and how you can prevent this.
First of all, we have to know what causes the breakouts in the first place, just to give you a complete understanding before we can let you know how to prevent it or how it can be treated.
So, what Causes break out?
The accumulation of dirt and oils is probably the main reason why acne developed. What happens is that when the small pores on your skin get clogged with this oil, it will lead to unwanted inflammations on the skin.
The end result here is that you will get those little dots on your skin, which are the break outs. As we can see here, we know that the way that we can prevent the acne from developing is actually to prevent the pores from clogging.
The accumulation of makeup residues can also cause your face to break out. You might wash off your makeup every day before you go to bed but some residue might be left behind, leaving you vulnerable to acne.
However, acne isn’t only caused by dirty skin only. Once you have left your skin dry like that for a long time, you are likely to start experiencing break outs. As such, it is important to make sure that you rehydrate your skin as soon as possible to close the pores back.
On top of the washing, there are other habits that can make the acne even worse than better. Let me give you some main habits

Do not use makeup products that can cause acne.
You should always make sure that you avoid using makeup, skin care products that have the potential of causing acne.
A lot of products may contain ingredients that can cause acne break outs. If you use such products, you may see a lot of blemishes on your skin.
As such, you should always avoid such products.
Instead, you should only use makeup, skin and hair products that are labelled “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores”.
In most cases, these products won’t cause breakouts in most people.
You should stay away from sharing makeup, makeup brushes or even applicators. You might be using “non-comedogenic” products, but you might develop blemishes if you are sharing makeup.
This doesn’t mean that acne is contagious- do not get me wrong. When you share makeup, makeup brushes or applicators, the acne-causing bacteria, oil and dead skin cells that is contained on other people’s skin can wind up on your makeup.
So, when you use that makeup, you can transfer their facial bacteria as well as dead skin cells onto your face, which can clog your pores and eventually lead to break outs.
As such, you should always make sure that you are the only person that is using your makeup products.
Do not dry out your skin
As we mentioned before, never dry out your skin. This is one of the things that people try to do.
Since we know that acne usually affects people that have oily skin, we may dry our skin as an attempt to avoid the acne all together.
This may lead you into using acne treatments until your face starts to feel dry. Take this from me- do not attempt it.
Dry skin is irritated skin and once you irritate it, you are at a risk of developing even more acne. Instead of doing that, you should use acne treatments as directed.
You should avoid using astringents, rubbing alcohol or basically anything that can dry out your skin.
Also, if your skin feels dry, apply a moisturizer that is specifically made for acne-prone skin. To be safe, apply it twice a day after you wash your face.
Do not Scrub your skin
So, I must admit. I have attempted this before and it did not go well. You might think that scrubbing your face clean can make the acne go away just like that. However, the opposite is true.
When you scrub your face, you are simply irritating your skin. This makes your skin more prone to acne.
Instead, when washing your face, be gentle with it. You want to use a mild as well as a non-comedogenic cleanser.
Using your fingertips, apply the cleaner onto your face and massage the skin in using circular motions.
After that, rinse with water- preferably warm water. Then gently pat your skin with a clean towel to dry the water.
Do not pop or squeeze the break outs
Break outs usually reach a point where you are tempted to pop them. However, you should never attempt it.
When you pop the acne, you likely push some of the contents of the break out, like pus, dead skin cells or bacteria) deep into your skin.
When this happens, the inflammations increase- your acne will come out even deeper and stronger in this case. As such, the acne will be more noticeable.
On top of that, you are likely to have scars and pain that goes in deeper.
Cleansing your skin
To minimize as well as to avoid breakouts, it is very important that you cleanse your skin, using facial cleansers of course.
When you cleanse your skin, you are providing your skin with a deeper clean that will, most certainly, open and clean your pores.

However, you should know that cleansing your skin alone just isn’t enough to clean up all the acne on your skin.
I mean, it is obvious that good skincare, in terms of cleansing, helps to remove the dirt, makeup residue and can reduce pore blockages.
Besides the regular cleansing, you should always make sure that you regularly use acne treatment products.
If your break outs are mild, I recommend that you use over-the-counter acne products first. Go for those products that contain salicylic acid as well as benzoyl peroxide- they are the ones that are most effective.
Use them regularly for a few weeks and pay attention to any changes on your face. In most cases, it is likely to reduce the bumps and make your skin smooth.
If your breakouts are more severe, store-bought acne products are likely not to help. Instead, you will need a prescription of acne medication from your doctor, for a better shot at clearing your skin.
Always keep one thing in mind. Whether you are using over-the-counter acne products or prescription, all products work best when they are applied to freshly washed skin that has been thoroughly dried up.
So, how often should you wash your face?
2 to 3 times a day is how often you should wash your face, however, many dermatologists recommend washing your atleast twice a day.
In that regard, if you are following the Japanese skincare routine, washing your face once in the morning just as soon as you wake up and once in the evening before you go to sleep is the best practice.
You might attempt to wash your skin more times than this because you have developed a deeper acne, but don’t.
When you wash your skin like, let’s say four times a day, you are likely to irritate your skin further. As a result, more acne will develop on your skin.
Also, do not wash your skin just once a day. That isn’t enough to clean up your acne, hence you will have very slow results in recovering from the acne.
